After the Fire: a Poem

I wrote this quite recently, and am crossposting it here from my Substack. May all wars and genocides end! May there be peace, and may we help bring it.

On that day

When people fell through the air

like burning leaves;

when smoke smudged

the bright air

and metal crumpled like paper;

On that day,

we should have learned

a truth that still eludes us:

That each life—

every one—

is of a worth

beyond all naming.
